In my opinion, what causes sorrow is the matter of concept of pleasure not being gratified.
What factors? You mean factors that cause for one to sorrow is most of the times caused by outside stimuli, force acting upon one.
Within us, it is either we succumb into sorrow, or we ignore the cause of such depending on how strong our mind is to cope or overthrow the underlying emotion of sorrow.

We are the recipients of the effect of the outside force, but we can do something to alter the effect, from sorrow to happiness, in some instances, to passiveness or being unaffected.
Summing up it is a cause and effect involving outside force and us within.

The outside factors cause internal reactions, and then the reactions surface, and therefore come back out. It's the circle of stimulants of the senses.

Our emotions are solely based on our own perceptions and we can learn to control them despite all external circumstances. It can be tough and it takes some time and practise but it can be done. We don't have to let external circumstances dictate our emotional state. We don't have to let life "happen to us", but we can be in total control of these things. I am much happier all around since learning of this concept. I am learning to take deliberate control of my life.
