Once I yank it out of park I can shift freely through all other gears. Putting it back in park I face the same degree of difficulty.

do the brake lights on the car work? that car has an interlock system that requires that your foot be on the brake to release the shifter from park. if you have your foot on the brake and it still won't come out of park, check to see if the brake lights are working. The interlock system uses the brake lights to monitor if you have your foot on the brake, so if the brake lights don't work it won't release the shifter from park. If the brake lights don't work, the problem is usually in the brake lamp switch. That switch is an easy replacement as it is under the dash at the top of the brake pedal.

if its not an electrical problem with the brake lamp switch, then you need to have the transmission shift linkage adjusted. take it to a honda garage to have that done as it is not something you can do at home

hope that helps answer your question

Possibly the spring(s) on the park safety release switch have lost their tension or are broken. The switch is under the shifter console, close to the front of the shifter. (P)ark. There is a bypass thru the shift console, look for a removable piece of plastic. Get this off and find something about 3-5" that fits the hole. Insert the piece and you will feel the shift bypass. Push down and move shifter from park.

I actually had a friend that this happened to in his 93 Honda, I removed the console around the shifter and greased the linkage mechanisms ( you'll see where it should be greased either its white grease or black grease) than I put everything back together and ran it through all the gears a couple of times just so the grease could get into all the crevices. I hope this helps.

Are you applying the brake pedal while shifting out of and into park?
