The standard for tipping is 20% of the original check, minus the tax. It's pretty easy to figure out. For instance, if the bill is $100, then the tip is $20. If the bill is $10, the tip is $2. If the bill is $465, then the tip is $92.
That's my own personal standard or tipping. I don't go below 20%, because in the United States, where I live, servers make less than minimum wage -- they have to live off of what they make in gratuity!
Sometimes I'll go over 20% if I had a really good time.
If I really, really want to go under 20%, I still don't, but I might leave a note like, "Better service=better tip" on the credit receipt.

I am a waitress on and off and have been for a while. I consider myself reasonable and realize that a $45 check for two people is a lot less work than a $45 check for a family. So I would be perfectly happy with $8 on $45 from two people. $9+ I would be really happy.
As for what I would tip if I were out with my husband...I would leave $8 for service that was fine, and $9 for service that was spectacular.
p.s. I hate waitresses that complain if they don't get at least 25%.
p.p.s. I will never leave less than $3 for a tip, even if my bill is $10! $3 is the minimum!!!!

I am a waitress....
when there is a party of 6 or more, we add an automatic gratuity of 18%... some places are 18% and others are 10%. It depends on the restaurant and the foods they serve.
Because I am a waitress myself, I will leave probably $10.. even if I eat by myself.
As a waitress, I know sometimes we get really busy and sometimes we tend to not pay as much attention to our tables as we could, but many guests understand and tend to tip better.
Also, I was pregnant during the Christmas time, was due the week after Christmas, so I got lots of big tips. lol.

I usually tip just a little over 15%. If the bill is less than $10 I will always leave at least $3. I know this sounds completely cheap, but I'm a college student and I pretty much need all the cash I can keep! :-O

I was once a waitress and i made huge tips so i know how it makes them feel when you leave a decent tip.I never go by the bill either.I always tip by how well the service is and i usually do the 10.00 tip as well except when i go out to a small lunch then it's around 3 to 4 dollars.

Hello
To me it really depends on the service of where we are eating. I have left a tip even if we are at a buffet type restaurant if the service is good.
On the other hand I have left nothing at a very posh restaurant where the service was very poor.
If leaving a tip for good service I will normally leave at minimum 15% of the bill.
Hope this helps.

For a $45 bill $10 is right on. At least in CA. If the service sucked (not the food) then maybe a little less.

i'm cheap and don't make much, but i do TIP. It should depend on how you think your service is first! Is she slow, rude, don't bring back the mustard for 10 minutes, stuff like that. Definitely
Then how much the bill is.. Remember . if you were a waitress you'd want a decent tip too. It's up to you on what you think.
Thanks
