A "hermaphrodite" is a person born with ambiguous genitalia.
Simply put, they have both male and female genetalia.
Parents of such children usually opt to surgically "assign" a gender to their child. Some choose to wait, and teach their child and let the child choose which gender they are most comfortable living their life.

It's where someone is born with genitalia of both sexes. That or... it resembles something of both sexes. It has to do with the fetus not deciding on one gender I believe.
