My niece made us a stepping stone for our house with our names and wedding date on it. It's really sweet and we have it proudly placed in our garden beside our front door.

speaking as someone who spent a large amount of time before my wedding selecting items on the gift registry, arguing with my groom nearly to the point of break-up over colors and patterns, dragging said groom to three different stores to complete the registry... see where i'm going here? i have to say the best thing you can do is to BUY A GIFT ON THE REGISTRY!!!!!! since those are the actual items the bride and groom need and want.
we received several "memorable gifts" of off-registry items. i am still trying to unload the giant crystal sunflower platter that we received from a well meaning guest without a gift receipt. we returned as many of the "unique" off registry gifts as possible, as we did not want them or ever ask for them, and purchased registry items that we actually needed.
we have a $50 gift certificate from an extremely overpriced store that has never been used - it wouldn't buy even a salt shaker at that store, and is useless. the gift certificate is in our wedding album, and yes, we think of the person that gave that to us when we look at it, which has been twice in the 9 years now that we have been married.
unless you want your relative to think of you in this way, either buy off the registry, or give them cash. otherwise the only way the bride and groom will remember you is as the relative that bought them that useless something...

For one of my showers, a girl I worked with gave me the start of a scrap book for my wedding and honeymoon. she knew where we were going so she did all of the pages with the themes of the places we were going to see and simple instructions (place photo here, or ticket stubs go here). It was really cute and I cried. I thought that it was the most thoughtful gift I received and something that I can treasure for ever.

Someone had our wedding invitation framed and gave it to us. That was sweet, but honestly, the most memorable gift we got was a full set of Calphalon cookware from my mom's brother. Seven years later, and I still use it every day!

I received some special Christmas items that hold very dear to my heart. A nice Nativity set would be nice. That is also something their children will remember putting out every year.

It was a beautiful large wooden heart, w/ our last name engraved, and burnt into the wood. We still have it hanging on the door, after all these years. I give it a new coat of Verithane once a year, to keep it looking like new.

Depending on how much money you want to spend, pay for their photographer or video tech. You can buy a really nice crystal picture frame, for that special wedding photo.

Her aunt gave us monogramed, knit coasters. We remember her when we put drinks on them (when they are messy drinks, no one else is over, and we are afraid of getting the good coasters ruined) because we can laugh at the odd gift.
I guess that's the kind of gift you are trying to avoid though.

I gave a sympathy card to a couple for their wedding. 10 years later and it's the only card they remember.

My first wedding my best guy-friend was my personal attendant. He gave me a can of Mt. Dew and the CD soundtrack to Paint Your Wagon. We used to listen to that on vinyl at my folks' house. And I still have that CD, he hunted it down for me.
