"Man's Search for Meaning" by Viktor Frankl
It's written by a Jewish psychiatrist who was sent to a concentration camp and observed who gave up and who were determined to stay alive.
This book changed my life. One sentence in the book was just what I needed at the time. I have recommended this book to others and have been amazed at how many other people have been affected by the same book. One woman told me it motivated her to go into social work.
(I started this book many years ago and put it down--seemed simplistic to me at the time. When it was recommended to me by an instructor, I read it through and was touched by it then.)

There are many good books about the Holocaust. The only critically acclaimed one I could find that started with the letter "M" was Maus by Art Spiegelman. Personally, my two favorite books are Night by Elie Wiesel and the Diary of Anne Frank.

I think you mean, Art Spiegelman's, "MAUS." It is a book only it is written like a comic strip. The jewish characters are mice and the german characters are cats. It's about a second generation of holacost surviors and how they relate to their parents. It is supposed to be really good. I have a copy, but have not yet gotten to it.

It's either Elie Wiesel's "Night" or "One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich" by Alexander Solzhenitsyn (both about 150 pages).

Maybe its "Number the Stars" by Lois Lowry? Its a book geared toward a young audience though and I read it when I was a kid. Its fairly short, but I think it was actually published in the 80's. I can't think of any more books. Do you have any more details?
