Alright, I need some help with an essay I have to write for my Civics class..here is the prompt:

Recently Article 4 of the Constitution has received a great deal of attention because Hawaii and Vermont have considered making a marriage between partners of the same sex a legally recognized marriage. Because of Article 4, some legal experts say that all other states also must recognize same-sex couples, married in Hawaii or Vermont, as legally being married. Therefore, these couples would have the same rights and privileges as opposite-sex married couples. In response, many states have passed amendments to their state constitutions outlawing same-sex marriage.
Put yourself in the position of a person who must interpret the federal government's role in this conflict among the states. If the federal government rules Article 6 will override the state regulations. Remember that you must interpret the law, not your personal feelings about the outcome.

I can't comment on the constitution, but my advice would be to initially remove the specific marriage problem that is bringing up the issue. The problem has to do with state rights and the federal government. I would address this problem and find similar examples where the federal government had overridden the state regulations. You can then see if the same sex marriage problem is unique.

For example, If I can have a concealed weapon in one state and then move to another state that does not allow it, that is not a big problem. I just can't have my gun. If driving rules, liquor laws, gambling, etc. are different from state to state that is not a big deal either (depending on what you think). If I get married in one state, but that marriage is not recognized in another state I moved to I think that would possibly be a big deal. How would my rights be affected compared to other different laws? Are there similar state laws that the federal government has changed because of similar things.

Not being American I am unfamiliar with your legal system but having studied English law I would have the following opinion.

The U S A is comprised of separate self-governing states and each one has it's own laws, being completely autonomous and independent of the others. On top of that there is Federal Law which must be obeyed by all member states. However I do not believe that any one state can impose it's laws on another state. Normal marriage is governed by Federal Law whilst so-called 'same-sex marriage' is not. Therefore such a union would not be valid in other states.

P S : It is my opinion that such 'arrangements' should not be encouraged. I am a great believer in proper heterosexual relationships. That is only my personal view, whatever other may think is up to them.

Sounds like you have to read both Articles and then
state what the Articles are saying. Do a google search and research both Articles 4 & 6. Keep your
essay as unbias as you can. Write it more like a
newspaper article.
