I keep hearing some of the right-wingers here claim that liberals don't believe in God. Of course, I know that there are plenty of liberals who are very religious and spiritual, so I would like some examples. By the way, I'm a Deist!

There are many religious liberals as there are religious conservatives.

I think that, to generalize, the two groups see a somewhat different role for religion in public life.

PS I am Christian.

The problem with these conservatives is that A) they're just aping what they heard somewhere else (rather than asking about peoples' religous beliefs) and B) when they say "God," they should really be saying "Jehovah" because that's the particular character they think they're referencing (though most of them have not read the Bible.)
However, the word "God" means, literally, a million different things to millions of people, such as the Deists, who do not base their conception on any collection of stories.
In may ways I am also a Deist, though I hold the Unitarians in the highest respect for producing numerous founding fathers and great spiritual leaders like Ralph Waldo Emerson.

It is also a shame that people claim things only if they're already invented. Perhaps my religion is uniquely mine, and I needn't have it match a label. Or, perhaps, I am a hybrid. Really, I consider myself 1/4 Buddhist, 1/4 Unitarian, 1/4 Mormon, 1/8 Jewish and 1/8 Hindu. Make of it what you will mindless conservatives, who cannot do anything but repeat the family tradition.

Raised an Episcopalian. Baptized at age 17 (believers baptism) as a Baptist. Drifted away from Christianity in my mid 20's and studied Buddhism and Gnosticism extensively before returning to Christianity 7 years ago. Currently not attending Church due to the politicizing that takes place in most churches. I am both religious AND spiritual. I have read the sacred texts of Islam and Judaism as well as 7 different versions of the Bible.

The Belief-o-matic pegs me as a Liberal Quaker. Bears investigation...

Organized religion is, and has always been, interested in two things; Money and Power! I would rather be an agnostic, which I am, than a Bible thumping hypocrite like the Reverend Ted Haggerd! Your political affiliation usually follows your life's beliefs. Therefore; since Republicans primary aspirations are money and power, it follows that religious people tend to vote Republican. Look up the word "liberal" in the dictionary and you will see why; While many liberals are religious, many aren't.

I'm a liberal, and I am Christian, however, I find truth and beauty in many religions and I enjoy the diversity. I guess what may set me apart from a lot of Christians is I don't think that you have to be a Christian to go to heaven, I don't see God being that picky when it comes to good people of all religions.

Answer: Varied I'm confident!
Hello Deist...I adhere to the practice of the Divine Feminine.
True many that follow this path are liberal, but as a community we bonded and successfully achieved the goal of amending Veteran Affairs attitude to allow pentagrams on the tombstones of our brothers and sisters.
Their ranks are predominately conservative/libertarian...and as a group we embrace and honour their convictions.
Could you respond with an example of such tolerance on the part of liberals.

Cafeteria Catholic

Even though your question was directed to liberals, I would add that the Democratic Party enjoys strong support from two minority groups that are very religious, Blacks and Latinos.

Well, since I'm a moderate who keeps being identified as a liberal by the right-wingers, I'll answer this one (grin). I'm Deist.

I'm a Christian.

BTW, the person who says liberals always put people down, obviously seems to choose to close her eyes to many of the things that Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, and many of the Cons on YA say.
