I'm asking because I admire that relationship. I ask how they'd explain it, so I can explain THAT to people who don't understand/agree with my feelings.

They don't need a paper to tell them how they feel about each other and where and how they are in their life.

OK, they sound good enough to me! Do get married, if this what keeping from saying I do. Then don't.

Its an individual choice to get married and not to married. I see a divorce when the two have the wrong ideals about marriages.

1) is a lots of work and time to keep it going
2) its not always going to be a easy road to travel. There will come a time they both have to face the rough time together as well they enjoy the good times they have.
3) they must communicate more than they want too
4) don't blame each other for their down faults or failures.
5) share the responsibility equally
6) don't do petty crap just to tick off your spouse
7) respect each other.
8) give each room to do some of the things that they would like to alone. You don't have to under them 24/7 give your spouse some room to exhale.

Its depend on what degree of independent you're think or talking about. Some guys would like their spouse to be some what independent to a certain degree.

If you feel your independence is more important to you, then you have a made a wise decision. And be happy with your choice you made.

From what I have seen and learn, that marriage is not for everyone. Due to their own ideal of what marriage life is all about. Half of them don't practice what they preacher any way.

Personally, the couple you mention and the Dude from Shawshank and his long time girl (Bull Durham) they got it figured out.

I speak from experience, Marriage changes people and things. You can hang with someone for that long and not get married and the spouse is entitled to all the same stuff as if they were married but without the paper. Perhaps it keeps the people on their toes, they're just dating in their minds not necessarily "required" to be together, I don't know? But it seems to work for them and if I could do it all over again, I'd go that route.

But to your question, don't worry about divorce when you're considering marriage, put that energy into your marriage.

Open communication with your spouse will help you maintain your independence, when you need some time alone or to be with friends, just be upfront with your spouse, we get it and the time away can be healthy for your relationship too.

Susan Sarandon & Tim Robbins
Oprah & Steadman
Sure there are other's.

Some of us don't see marriage as being necessary.
Notice how lawyers are the middle man for any legal snafu's, and who wants to pay them?

I think some people feel pressured to get married because of society standards. Our country has a way of being catty and labeling everything.

I don't see my relationship as being anyone elses business but mine and whom I'm involved with.

why should anyone need to explain their relationship

Many (myself included) do not believe in marriage...I think things change for the worse when one obtains that piece of paper that says "marriage certificate"; therefore, I choose to remain single
