I have a small fish tank and is using a hang filter. It comes with a catridge which contains carbon inside. I am now considering adding ceramic balls into my filer so bacteria can cultivate. However, whenever i add the ceramic balls into the my filter, water seems to overflow. Can I just leave the ceramic balls in the fish tank instead of in the filter. Will the bacteria be able to cultivate there ? I have current stack those ceramic balls on my sand inside my fish tank. Need advice .. Thanks !!

To be totally honest you really don't need them in a set up like you describe. Bacteria will grow on most any surface exposed to water in your tank. The filter media and gravel are two of the most heavily populated areas so as long as you don't over damage the bacteria in both places at the same time all will be fine.

Yes, the bacteria will populate the ceramic balls if they are just placed in the aquarium, but no more so that they would a piece of wood or a rough or oddly shaped ornament. Never hurts though.
