Gases from decomposition collecting in their body cavity makes that part the lightest and therefore float the highest in the water.

Well when my guppy died, he was laying down on the gravel. That's why I had a hard time finding him. But to answer your question, I think all the gas from their stomach escapes, and thus they float upside-down.

I agree somewhat that their bodies get full of gases and it makes them puff up and float. But a lot of the time, they get caught in the plants and decor and you have to pull them out.

i guess the food in their tummies decompose quickly, and releases gasses. the same reason any other living thing that dies floats.
also i think fish has an air bubble somewhere in them, i'm not sure where, that stabilises them when they swim, and when they die, maybe their balance is then lost, and the air bubble makes them float, and since the backbone and head is heave, that bit shows down, and the light bit containing the gut shows up.
i dunno, just guessing?

I don't know. Maybe thier stomach has more air than the rest of its body, and thats why they float on thier backs.
