ok im a junior in high school and i work at a pizzaria/restraunt. i just started there about a month ago and everyone there likes me, well they used to, but last night my boss called me asking me about an order that i recieved on the phone. someone wanted a 3 ft sub for today ( i recieved the order on monday) and the woman said she would come in that day to pay for it, so anywayy my boss called me last night on my day off asking me what time it was for and if i got a phone number. i didn't get them because the woman said she was going to pay on monday and i figured hed ask her then but she never came in. so he was like yelling at me on the phone but he didn't fire me and now i have to go into work today. im dreading it because i feel like they will all hate me.
so when i go in today i was planning on just saying "im am really sorry about not getting a phone number or time and you can take it out of my pay for the week if you need to for the sub" is that alright? thanks

You are on the right track, apologize to the boss for not getting her information but don't offer to pay for the sub. Everyone makes mistakes, even the boss, it's part of learning and will happen from time to time. But just owning up to the mistake is the responsible thing to do rather than try to pass the blame on to someone else.

I don't think that anyone is going to hate you for this. Just remember next time to take all the information down about the customer and then see if they want you to follow up or handle it differently next time. Keep your head up, you are doing well by keeping a job and going to school.

Hi, I'm in HR. I think that's more than fair and very mature of you. However I don't think it should come to that. I'd reiterate when you went in that it seemed to be a miscommunication and that you were under the impression that she'd come in with the money and all the delivery information. I mean, if she didn't pay and didn't care about leaving delivery info, maybe she wasn't serious or changed her mind. I can't see how your boss would think it was a real order. So I would just apologize and tell him since she was a no show, you thought there was no order, but that in the future you will be sure to get all the info on the first call. I think you should be fine. Good luck.

That really is not that big a deal. You probably should have gotten a number, but your boss should not have yelled at you b/c you didn't!! It is way generous of you to offer to pay for the sub, but they should just be able to write it off as a loss! Don't stress too much about it!

Don't get too worked up over this. If the woman did not come in and pay in advance, would your boss really want to prepare the sub if it were not paid for in advance?

For future reference, ask your boss what he wants you to do in a situation like that. I would expect that he would at least like you to get a name and number.

I think it is appropriate for you to apologize, but hold off on the offer to pay for it. You don't know the whole situation until you get there.

NOOOO...You should not have to pay for it out of your check! People make mistakes at work all the time...I would just apologize and they will get over it. if you are a good worker and this has been the only mistake you have made then your boss will let it go. if not then look for another job.....

you were looking for a job when you found this one

Don't worry about it. Everyone makes mistakes, and he will get over it. Legally they cannot take the money out of your check. Do not offer to pay for it. Also, the day is not over yet. Did she say what time she wanted to pick it up?
