A pony.

There are several ways to answer this. A small horse as in a young horse is a foal. The female foal is a filly, a male is a colt.

There are also little horses called minature horses, around the size of a dog.

And ones just a little smaller than a horse is a pony.

First off it depends on what you mean by a small horse.

A pony- is any mature horse that is 14.2 hands ( a hands is a measurement used in the livestock world, it is equal to 4 inches) and under, there are different types of ponies however.

If you mean a young horse it would be called a

foal- if it is under the age of 1
yearling- if it is between the age on 1-2

also a young male is a colt and a young female is a filly

a small horse is a miniature horse.
a young horse is a foal (colt if its a boy, filly if its a girl)

A pony isn't technically a small horse, they are different animals!! a pony is stockier, hardier, and generally has a thicker mane, tail and coat. a pony has a calmer temperament than a horse, and is generally less spooky!!!

Bear in mind that i am generalising, and i know ponies arent neccessarily nicer than a horse!!

A pony carries itself differently to a horse too. thats why there are miniature horses and miniature ponies, even though they may be the same size!

The height cut off for a pony is 14.2hh. Anything taller than this is officially a horse.

I say officially because there are some pony breeds that will occasionally reach taller than that!!

I hope i have answered your question fully! And not confused you too much with technicalities and character traits!

I'm assuming your really asking about a young horse ( a baby) , not a "small horse"
A baby horse is called a
FOAL
- a boy or girl baby horse is called Filly or a Colt
Filly for a girl horse
Colt for a Boy horse

This applies for horses under four years of age
Hope that helps...

A small horse is a pony or a miniature horse. A baby horse is called a foal. A female foal is a filly and a male foal is a colt.

Well, it depends. There are ponies, minature horses, foals, and yearlings. A yearling is a horse a year old, a foal is a baby horse that is under a year, a horse under 8 hands, (1 hand = 4 inches) is a minature, and a ponies heights varies,
Hope This Helps!

I like smorse but personally I just call it a small horse and if it is under a certain size (I don't remember which) then it is a pony.

A pony is any of several different horse breeds with a specific conformation and temperament. By definition, ponies measure less or equal to 14.2 hands high (hh) (1.47 meters or 4.83 feet) at the withers, where one hand is equal to approximately four inches. However, the term "pony" can be used in general (or affectionately) for any small horse, regardless of its actual size or breed. Compared to horses, ponies often exhibit thicker manes, tails and overall coat, as well as proportionally shorter legs, wider barrels, heavy bone, thick necks, and short heads with broad foreheads.

Up to the height of 14.2 hands high, it is classed as a pony. Anything above that height is called a horse. Apart from true minature horses, which are tiny

A miniature horse is actually its own breed. It is proportioned just like a horse but cannot be taller than 34 inches.

Any full size horse that is shorter than 14.2 hands is considered a pony. Although technically ponies often have thicker manes, tails and overall coat, as well as proportionally shorter legs, wider barrels, heavier bone, thicker necks, and shorter heads with broader foreheads than a horse.
