Answer is D; as the moon orbits the earth, it reflects different amounts of sunshine down to the earth. See the following for wonderful pictures of the different phases (more than four).

d, the moon revolves. So that when it is at different positions around the Earth it is also in a different position in relation to the Sun. Since the moon reflects sunlight it is this that causes us to see different phases.
