Hi, I just got accepted into the Nursing program and they told me I need to get a CPR certificate before I start. I used to have one because I used to work at a mental hospital, but it expired in 2006... could I renew it, if so, how and where? or do I need to get a new one, and also how and where... I have no clue! thanks

CPR certification is good for two years only. Since yours expired in 2006 you will need to retake the entire class. They wont let you just renew it. Its not a big deal though. I think its something like 8 hours for a new cert and 4 hrs to renew. Most nursing programs include this in part of their training. Most schools as well as healthcare faqcilities require that it (CPR CLASS) be approved by the American Red Cross. I would think you ould go online to american red cross cpr certification and it would tell you where to get a cert. in your area. I hope this helps. Also do a local search for cpr classes in your area. Congrads on getting accepted into a nursing program. Lord knows we need more nurses.

If you've already had the course and passed once, renewals can be done on line. There are plenty of sites to go to. Just find the one that seems most user friendly to you and easy on the wallet. Find out which level you need, since I am not sure you are considered a health care provider...yet! The third and fifth links have either the whole course as well as the renewal course (I think they're really just the same thing), so you should probably choose between those. Otherwise, just ask your nursing program you're in. They probably offer CPR courses all the time.

There is not a clean simple answer for this. There are several on-line groups that offer certification in CPR, etc. The certificate is 'legal and legitimate', but not necessarily worth anything. You see, for a certification to 'mean' anything, someone has to accept or recognize it, and very few places accept or recognize on-line CPR for many reasons- mostly because the 'accepted' certifications involve hands-on practice with an instructor who is making sure you are doing it right, and the instructor is held accountable to a national accreditation program. It is kind of like free on-line ordination in certain churches. It is legal and legitimate, but there is not a denomination that will hire you as a minister based on it!

FYI: American Heart Association (AHA) CPR is good for 2 years, American Red Cross (ARC) is only good for 1 (there are reasons for this we need not go into at this time.)

You can renew an ARC card with a Review class- videos, practicals, and written test, or a Challenge class- practicals and written test only. You can also do a Blended Learning in many areas- on-line instruction, classroom test outs of the practical skills.

You can do some on-line classes that are not AHA or ARC approved, and get a card- but no one has to accept the cards from those sources whereas most employers accept AHA or ARC.

best place to get it renewed is to call red-cross and ask where their classes are being held. and yes, you have to renew it because it only lasts for a year.
