There should be and there is. The other day I heard a good one. When these standards were adopted the US car companies hired 100 lawyers and the Japanese car makers hired 100 new engineers!!! Doesn't that just figure! Look at where each of them are now. Anybody want to buy a big gas sucking SUV?? Actually it feels like the 70's all over again, didn't we just do this awhile ago because we were running out of oil?? Should have done something then, oh that's right we did, we went to others countries and exploited them for oil and started to make bigger cars again. Hey what's wrong with that alot of people got rich, right!!?? It is a very sad commentary on the American people that they need to be forced into doing the right thing. Not all Americans obviously but you know who you are.

Adding to the comments of Mike F, Toyota is now eclipsing GM as the car company selling the most cars. Maybe hiring engineers works better than hiring lawyers.

There is. Its call ed The CAFE standards. It is controlled by congress and our elected officials, who are controled by the lobbyist, instead of their constituants needs. Oil lobbyists are the biggest and excercise the most influence. We are F-A-R behind the rest of the world in our MPG standards.
Elmar66 -Wow, how about only answering questions that you at least have a clue on. Obviosuly this question wasn't one of them. CAFE standards have been in existence for some time. Do some research, a mind is a terrible thing to waste. And how is improving cars MPG a restriction of our freedom, he" I can drive farther on a tank of gas, that makes me more free in my book!

Most certainly. And I think that it should be pretty strict, and if the vehicle doesn't pass, the makers don't get a fine, but the car doesn't get released for sale to the public until it meets requirements.

I personally think that most cars that are coming out today should be able to push over 30 mpg, easily.
If a car gets below 15 mpg, it makes me laugh.
