Webdesign? I'd *tend* to say, IBM or HP or Toshiba, in that order, as rated by consumerreports and PC magazine. All fully loaded, like say, 1G+ memory, fair amount of disk. (Make sure you wind up with Firefox, IE, and mebbe Opera and Amaya). This is all Windows. Get well-acquainted with someone who owns a Mac.
I say all this because, as a web designer, you'll be designing for the vast majority of the world, whose viewers of web pages are Windows users. You want to have your web pages appeal to their computers and browsers, so you'll *first* make sure your web pages look good there, by conveniently testing them on your own computer. Then wander around and test on other Windows computers and then perhaps on Macs!
Mac has superior graphics, and possibly superior security. If you want first and foremost web design, though, Windows machine, is probably your answer.

If you are to do a lot of webdesigning, the size of your harddisk will vary. If the website will have a lot of pictures, you will need a bigger hard drive to support the amount of space pictures take up. However, if the website will not have many pictures, you could probably get away with less hard drive space. Right now, the minimum hard drive space you can get is about 60-80GB, which is probably plenty enough. However, RAM capacity is not too good. You will probably need to upgrade the RAM to about 1-2GB to support the programs and internet applications you will be running. You might want to ask a person specializing in this kind of stuff that works at an electronics store, like Best Buy or Circuit City. My best recommendations would be to take the minimum harddisk space, but upgrade the RAM to at least 1GB, preferably 2.
Good Luck!!

Before you decide on a computer, look at what you want to use it for. Find and if possible test drive different web development software systems to find one you like and think will work best for you. The buy the computer that meets or exceeds the recommended requirements for the Sofware and OS. If buying a laptop, remember that 90 percent of all laptops on the market are made by a few asian companies, and sold by other companies. Example, I have a Dell laptop that was manufactured by Compal (Compal uses a patented powere connected that is easy to identify). At work many people have Gateway laptops that are identical to my dell except fot the brand-name logo. So the main difference is in service, support, and price..

Just a laptop? Toshiba is good as is Sony. Web designing? You may even want to consider Mac(yuck). I'd recommend a good monitor to attach to the laptop just to save your eyes! If you insist on a standard PC I'd lean towards AMD Athlon processors and the best video properties you can get! At least 1Gb of Ram is a must! Good luck! ;-)=

If you are doing web design, then go mac! You want a laptop? You should go with the MacBook Pro. You can customize your own at Apple.com. You should have a lot of HD memory because you will be probably working wit ha lot of movies. As for the color, it depends on your style. The last thing you want for a web-designing computer is a windows machine. I have seen sites done by windows machines. They are horrible! Use a mac! Go here to customize one now: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?nnmm=browse&mco=D2D493CA&node=home/macbook/macbook_pro

I wouldn't get anything with a whole heck of alot of bells and whistles.. Even businesses wont need alot like that.
Just something that has at least 1-gig Ram.
At least a 1.3 ghz or higher processor (( Most processors are now duel Core ))
and the largest HD you're able to get.
Basically just that simple.

Mac for web designing: photoshop and quark works best in mac enviroment. Also nowadays macs can dual boot with windows. If you coding with Asp.net or visual then lauch with windows, however if you are working with Graphics designing then mac is the way to go.
best way but expensive:
15'' MacBook Pro 2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2GB/120GB/SuperDrive
Cheap way
go with dell notebooks. check on slickdeals.net when offers come in.
