the sympathetic nervous system takes over and (fight or flight) your adrenaline starts pumping and you make a decision to run away or to fight back...or freeze up whatever. Your body makes the decision to do whatever it needs to to survive.

The amygdala in your brain is an ancient brain part and that is where fear consolidates and causes action. It is located deep inside the head and humans share that brain part with even very primitive animals.

With no conscious thought whatsoever, this little brain part starts sending neuron signals to the rest of the body to run or hide or whatever seems primitively the best approach.

your fight or flight system kicks in through adrenaline and your hair stands up, heart rate kicks up, eyes dilate, and i think ur digestion stops as well.. all of which makes u run faster, look scary (raised hair seems to be evolutionary) or hit harder.
