I like fantasy and historical fiction the most. But will read anything, except those mushy romance novels.
Thanks

The Outlander series (D. Gabaldon)--then check out the best fan site, Ladies of Lallybroch
the Pern books (Dragonflight is 1st) by Anne McCaffrey
anything by Mercedes Lackey, though she has a couple series that are historical fantasy--the Elemental Masters which are based in part on fairy tales (Fire Rose, Serpent's Shadow, Gates of Sleep, Phoenix & Ashes, Wizard of London) and a series set in Tudor times (This Scepter'd Isle, Ill-Met by Moonlight, and a new one that I haven't read yet, something about Slanderous Tongues)
the Deryni books by Katherine Kurtz
the Warlock books by Christopher Stasheff (science fantasy)
The Belgariad & Mallorean by David Eddings (I don't know that I recommend his later works, though)--2 series, Pawn of Prophecy is the 1st one
some darker stuff by Tanith Lee: Tales of the Flat Earth
Robin McKinley & Tamora Pierce (Tortall)--both are more Young Adult writers, but still good.

Harder to recommend historical fiction without knowing a time period. Jean Plaidy writes across several eras, but she's a bit stilted and old-fashioned. For Elizabeth I, my favs are Young Bess; Elizabeth, Captive Princess; and Elizabeth & the Prince of Spain, all by Margaret Irwin. Also older, but not so stilted. There are others, but the details escape me at the moment; I may edit later, esp. if you indicate an era you're interested in.
Mystery: the Lord Peter books by Dorothy L. Sayers (Whose Body? is the 1st; he cecomes significantly more human thru the series)

I also love historical fiction. Cain River was amazing. The author researched her own family tree and includes pictures of the characters. Of course she added a lot to her history making the novel fiction.

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan is a about 1800 China. It follows the friendship of two girls through adulthood. They have their feet bound and learn a secret language only for women which has been passed down for generations.

The most recent great book I read was The River of Doubt. It's fiction about Teddy Roosevelt traveling on the Amazon with an explorer and his brother. They face disease, starvation, a murder occurs . . . face paced and so incredible!

"Annie Between the States" is a historical fiction by L. M. Elliott. Sorry..but there is a little "mushy" romance in it.
Annie Sinclair's Virginia home is in the battle path of the Civil War. Her brothers, Laurence and Jamie, fight to defend the South, while Annie and her mother tend to wounded soldiers. When she develops a romantic connection with a Union Army lieutenant, Annie's view of the war broadens. Then an accusation calls her loyalty into question. A nation and a heart divided force Annie to choose her own course.
"The Merchant of Death" is the first of the Pendragon series by D.J. MacHale. That has a combination of sci-fi and fantasy.
"Boston Jane" by Jennifer L. Holm. Historical fiction.
Impulsive Jane, ever on the path to leaving behind her rough-and-tumble tomboy childhood to become a proper young lady, agrees to meet her very genteel fiancé on the rugged west coast of America. Unfortunately, William is not there when she arrives. Suddenly, Boston Jane, as her new Chinook neighbors call her, must cast aside her "faultless young lady" demeanor and depend on her long-suppressed pioneer spirit to survive. Holm cleverly weaves in lessons from Jane's Philadelphia finishing school, Miss Hepplewhite's Young Ladies Academy, in dramatic and often-hilarious contrast to the trials and tribulations Jane faces at sea and in Oregon country.

If you like fantasy, you should definitely read 'The Lord of The Rings' or 'The Chronicles of Narnia'.
For historical fiction, try the Philippa Gregory books like 'The Other Boleyn Girl', 'The Constant Princess' or 'The Virgin's Lover'. Her books are set during Tudor England.

For some fun light reading, try "The Summerhouse" by Jude Deveraux. It is about the lives of 4 women who all have the same birthdate, become friends, and decide to reunite at the age of 40. I couldn't put the book down and I am not much of a reader. For mystery, I am enjoying the Carol Higgins Clark series. "Burned" and "Iced" have been my favorites (two seperate novels). Happy reading!

for a good read try Graham Greene's 'A Burnt Out Case.' or something more existential perhaps Albert Camus' 'The Stranger.' Michael Ondaajte who wrote the 'English Patient' wrote an ever better story, 'Coming Through Slaughter.'
