I haven't double checked this, but I'm pretty sure your friend is correct, and heres why I think that:-
I read an article on the subject (a long time ago now ) Queen Victoria had to sign the papers making this homosexuality illegal, she read it all through and found it included women, she berated the Prime minister at the time and called him 'foolish' she asked how two females could possibly commit the act. The Prime minister was too embarrassed to explain, so she signed the male part only. That is why women were not included in the law!!! That may sound unbelievable but it is true.
I can personally recall the law being cancelled maybe about 40 odd years ago and the reason I remember that is because a friend of mine had me in stitches, he read the newspaper story on the subject out to me, then asked for my reaction, I said something like I couldn't care less. He looked at me for a wile, he was thinking it over, then he said "I don't think I do either, but what if they make it compulsory"???

the romans made the first known law against homosexuality, though this left when they did, the church would often persecute any people found commiting sodomy. as the book of Leviticus defines sex between men as a crime that warrants capital punishment. then henry viii introduced the first legislation in the uk against homosexuals with the Buggery Act of 1533, making buggery punishable by hanging, a penalty not lifted until 1861. homosexuality was illegal in britain until 1967, though is still illegal in 70 out of 197 countries. sorry about your bet, you lost :(

Henry the eighth made buggery illegal several centuries ago.
But it was not illegal in the times of the romans and the greeks.
Then in the 1960's it stopped being illegal in the UK.
Now it is almost accepted as OK by most people.
Will the tide turn again? Who knows.

Henry VIII actually made sodomy punishable by death in 1533. Even before that homosexuals were often persecuted and killed for religious reasons.

Sorry about your bet.

Is homosexuality an actual offence as such? There may be legislation relating to behaviour in public but I don't think that any behaviour behind closed doors has been classed as illegal. It may be frowned upon and thought of as not being nice but that does not make it illegal.

A lifestyle is deemd illegal in the UK? Does Sir Elton John know about this? Would they have knighted him if he was participating in a ILLEGAL lifestyle? I think not!
