If you play pocket pinball, it can be both your left and your right nut.
In the morning when your sack is all shriveled up, you need to see which way it sets, and that will determine if it remains as your left nut, or perhaps more boldly, is now referred to as just "YOUR NUT."
When you get kicked in the middle of your legs, you have to refer to being kicked in the "NUT" not "nuts."

I would have thought it was obvious. The nut that remains is demonstrably left. If the left nut had been cut off, however, that would have been a different story.

No, it isn't. Its referred to as neither a left nut nor a right nut, just "your nut".
As an analogy, think of a cyclops. A cyclops has neither a left eye nor a right eye, just "an eye".
Of course, I could see the need to determine the "sidedness" of your remaining nut if you happened to be wearing a missle pouch and were faced with the dilema of which compartment in which to put your nut.

Here, just in case you've ever wondered about the removal of a nut.
