I have spoken to my boss last week about possibly leaving but I told him I hadn't made a definite decision yet. Today, my boss has offered to take me to lunch for Secretaries Day. Would it be inappropriate to tell him at lunch that I've decided to quit or should I do it before lunch or wait until tomorrow?

I think it's appropriate to do it as soon as possible. They'll need to get someone to replace you, and that takes time. I'm sure he'd appreciate the courtesy, not to mention the fact that you may need him (them) as a reference one day.

Good luck!

I think that you should follow your instincts. In my own opinion, however, it seems that he (or she) obviously doesn't like the idea of you questioning whether you should quit or not, which is why he offered lunch. Telling him at lunch would be slightly rude. Telling him before lunch would tell him that you really are 90% out of 100% certain that you want to quit. Telling him the next day would show that you appreciate his thoughtfulness, but wasn't enough to make up for what you are deciding to quit for. If you are still unsure about taking my advice, follow your own instincts. Either way it goes, at the end of the day, you will know that you have made the decision that you think is right for you.

go to lunch, do not bring it up yourself, he might bring it up himself, if so state that you have enjoyed working for him , however you are leaning towards the new position because of the opportunities it would present for your future. tell him you are going to decide in the next day or two. however if you decide to leave you will give him adequate notice and will not leave him in a bind. by approaching this in a professional way you are removing emotional issues. . when you do tell him do it in the afternoon when things have slowed down for the day, ask him when you could have five minuets of his time, tell him it was a hard decision but you are going to take the new position, then shut up. have a good lunch. i am a boss.

Tell him during lunch. If you must go then you must go!

Submit it in writing and leave it in his in box. Be gracious and complimentary (don't burn your bridges).
