You can go to any Lowes, Home Depot or large Hardware store and buy an Epoxy kit made especially for painting tubs and sinks. I was a salesman for a paint company for 25 years and I use to sell the kits to dealears.

I started small with the bathroom sink and used a special product for sinks. The product does come in colors, but not a wide variety (I think just blue, ivory, pink, etc.).
The three things I learned when using this were (a) make SURE the surface is clean before you start, (b) let each coat cure at least 2 hours to be sure it's dry before applying the next and (c) don't be chintzy with the paint. If the brush is too dry (doesn't have enough paint), it will leave streaks that you'll have to sand out.
Good luck, and let me know how it turns out!

There is a kit that you can buy to 'refinish' the old tub. I did it about 15 years ago on an old tub in a rental property and it looked really nice, the only drawback was the smell. Make sure that you are working in a well ventilated place.

Some say not to do this yourself but, I've done it many times to more then a few tubs. It works great, maybe they didn't read the directions well enough?
Go to Home Depot and get the kit, it costs $35.00. It requires work and about two days with drying time. If you have any bad scrapes a hint, get a bonding kit from a car store (fiberglass repair kit) if you take your time and do it right it will come out fine. I have some that have been in for twelve years.

Do NOT buy the refinishers they sell at box stores, they are a good product, but not for a whole tub.
Look in your yellow pages for a tub refinisher, I had an old claw foot done several years ago for $300.

I know that you can hire someone to come out and refinish your tub, we had it done to my moms house and I think it cost about 300$. I don't know what they refinished it with, but it was definitely not paint. if you want to do it yourself maybe you should see if you can buy the finish at a home improvement store.

Dont think you can paint the tub, the water would not fare well with the paint but there are those bathtub covers....basically just a form that you place right over your old tub to make it look brand new....theres a place in our mall that does it so i know it exists, but I dont know what its called...Sorry.

You can put a new coat on the tub.
See the attached link for a company that sells a good product.

There is another alternative. It is a sleeve, that is fitted to your existing tub, that is attached directly into the tub!
