My husband just informed me that my sister in law is trying to be induced next week. They are going in for an ultra sound this week in hopes that everything looks good for her to induce next week. She is due on May 15th. She was put on bedrest 2 weeks ago because of a wierd reaction to some cold medicine, and she is extremly bored, very big and miserable. As I recalled from being pregnant, being huge and miserable the last few weeks is normal. I am just wondering if this would be okay for the baby. What kinds of risks are involved in this kind of early delivery? Would a doctor really do this if there was nothing wrong with the baby or mother, except that she is bored and miserable being so big? Please help me sort this out.

I cannot pick a best answer here, because everyone has been great. I am mainly concerned that this inducing is just too selfish and want the best for my niece. I was miserable when I was pregnant, but my little one came when she wanted, just like millions and millions of other babies! Thanks to everyone for the help it has put my mind at ease knowing it will be pretty much okay for the baby.

40 weeks is considered full term .. but you can have the baby from 38 weeks on and have it considered full term .. and can have it up to 42 weeks and still be considered full term.
anything before 38 weeks is pre-mature and anything after 42 weeks is considerd post term.
they usually dont induce until 38 weeks, but the baby can be born at 36 weeks with no complications.
good luck! God bless!

With any birth there is a risk of complications, but after 37 weeks a baby can survive outside the womb with no complications. Technically a baby is considered full term after 37 weeks. Next week your sister in-law will be within that 37 weeks. To be induced you are given a hormone (can't remember the name) that your body produces to naturally go into labor. It just speeds up the process. Although, when you are induced, there is a chance you will need a c-section because you may not dialate enough.

They will induce if mother or baby are in distress or danger.
I wouldn't consider being big and miserable in danger though, or even being confined to bed rest!! I was on bedrest from 16-30 weeks.
I am now big, miserable, bored and having constant contractions, but even at 38 weeks, they saw no reason to induce me when I went to hospital. They told me to walk etc... and try to induce my baby naturally as I'm already dilating.
I think they will induce any time from 28 weeks on IF the baby is in fetal distress, but I wouldn't have thought they'd induce so soon for no real reason. There aren't many risks in delivery after 36 weeks, but it is better the longer baby can stay in there, especially since a baby isn't considered full term until between 37-42 weeks.
I hope it goes OK for her, but I seriously doubt a decent doctor would induce...

40 weeks.. is full term
there aren't too many risks. both my children were 3 weeks early.. what they do is check to make sure that the lungs are fully formed and strong.. but they never induce because you are bored and miserable.. so that's a little strange.. because if they did that then people would be doing that all the time.. LOL!! because as you know that when you are pregnant, "misery" is part of the package!! but usually at the end you actually get very energetic!! more like a second wind.. and that's when you really know its time!

A pregnancy is considered 40 weeks long, however, you are considered full term at 38 weeks.
Probably if she were to be induced right now, the baby would probably be fine, but I doubt they'd induce her just because she's miserable. Everybody is miserable this late in pregnancy.
I was induced at 38 weeks 2 days, but because they thought my baby might be in distress, but I was miserable too.
Good luck to her and congratulations on your new niece or nephew!

I have been trying to be induced for three weeks now and the Dr really does not do it unless its extremely necessary. Babies are seen as term after 37 weeks or when they weigh over five pounds. Two of my friends recently gave birth around this date and had perfectly healthy babies, the Dr would also administer treatment before the birth to help mature the lungs.

40 weeks is term, 38 they call term. they called my 36 weeker almost term, 34 and sooner is preterm. (almost had mine at 31 and 34 weeks, thats how i know) they will not induce just because shes bored, i wanted induction at 34 weeks, they said if my baby is not out its because he isnt ready to come out yet. babies born at 36 weeks are usually just a little smaller and VERY sleepy the first few days, mine slept constantly for the first 2.

A full pregnancy is considered 40 weeks, but the baby is fully developed at 38 weeks and it is usually safe to deliver at 36 weeks.

A baby is full term at 37 weeks. Most babies do well and adapt fine. They may be a little sleeper then a 40 weeker but overall they are perfectly fine.
