I've never worked at a Starbucks but in my youth I worked in a few coffee shops. It's always busy but it can be a load of fun too.
The only thing that really sucks is the customers who think that because you are working in a coffee shop that you are somehow beneath them, or stupid or lazy. Just like a lot of the people who answered this question! And since Starbucks is frequented mainly by yuppies who think they're above everyone else because they drive Volvo's and drink 4$ cups of coffee, I would warn your friend that he will most likely encounter a lot of pretentious snots who think they are better than him. They will also probably expect him to be psychic - they'll come in on Monday and order something and come back Thursday expecting him to know what they want from memory. And they will ask retarded questions like "how many calories are in a packet of sugar?"
I often say I probably would've taken a career in customer service if it weren't for the damn people! I wish your friend luck.

It's busy and you deal with a lot of snooty, ignorant people! But then again, it's a retail job really, so what's new? I was a shift manager for 4 years in college and they work you to death and your pay isn't that great. I made a whopping $7.50/hr to start and $7.73 when I left (the highest you can get per raise is .23!). And the smell in your clothes when you leave...ugh. You have to wash your clothes right away or you (and the entire room they sit in) smell like stale coffee and sour milk! You also get addicted to their products. When I quit, I lost nearly 20 lbs! You do, however, meet a lot of really cool people. I'm still in contact with a few people that I worked with and I met my best friend there. I have a "real" job now and sometimes I dream about quitting and working at Starbucks. Guess it couldn't have been that bad then, huh?

I have a friend who works in Starbucks and she absolutely loves it.
She's worked there for six years and she gets nearly £6 an hour.
She says it can be quite busy and hectic but that's like all retail work.
(and anyone who looks down their noses at retail workers should try doing the job for a few weeks and they'll see how 'easy' it is then)

I've never worked there, but I frequent various coffee places (I have a bad caffeine habit) and they always always ALWAYS seem really miserable in Starbucks. Miserable and busy.
Just an observation.
Personally, I avoid jobs where I have to face the general public...

Well, my uncle works at Starbucks. He said that its pretty tiring but its fun. Then he said when you make the coffee the smell lights up the ceiling with shining coffee beans.

minimum wage to work like a slave serving coffee to rude Londoners all day. no thanks
if he is a graduate he is better off trying to get into one of the big companies in London instead of wasting a summer at starbucks. it wont look great on his CV if he is a graduate in whatever but instead of sorting out a job in his desired field he played it safe and got a job in a coffee shop.
