About Gas Drops
What are gas drops?
Infant gas drops usually contain an over the counter drug (Simethicone or Symethicone). Simethicone is designed to allow gas bubbles in the stomach and intestines to come together more easily. This makes it easier for baby to pass gas. Simethicone is most often used to relieve the pain associated with gas pressure. This pain can be caused by excess gas in the stomach.
Why does my baby have so much gas?
Colicky babies cry a lot. Crying can cause baby to swallow more air which causes gas.
Are gas drops safe?
Before giving your baby gas drops you should consult with your pediatrician. Gas drops are generally considered safe, but should not be given to baby if they have liver or kidney disease or any type of serious illness. Again, consult with your pediatrician before giving your baby gas drops or any other medication.
Can I mix gas drops in with baby's bottle?
In general, most gas drops can be mixed with a baby's bottle. You should consult the manufacturer's suggested use and recommendations before adding to your baby's bottle to be sure that it will work and be safe.
How much should I use?
Each manufacturer has their suggested dose listed on the package.
Are there popular brands of gas drops?
For babies, the popular gas drop brands are Gerber, Little Tummies, and Mylicon. Click here to see a complete list of gas drops.
