I believe they use the same material for shower pans Either Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or Chlorinated polyethelene (CPE). If you take a sample up they can tell you. There are solvents for gluing these materials. HD has them in plumbing dept. HD also sells liner in plumbing and Garden center off the roll...

Here's a link to a how to for PVC shower liner. Much of it applies to your repair.

The hardest part will be finding the leak. Do you know where it is? Assuming you can find it, there are marine-glues you can get that will cure under water. Lowes and Home Depot sell them. They come in a tube about the size of a pack of Lifesavers. You cut off a piece, them mash it together until it's a consistent color. Then massage the gummy result over the hole. If you can, try to put it partly through the hole.

If you do re-line the pond, consider the "Titanic Technique." Clean the old liner very well -removing any buildup of algae, etc. Lay a grid of caulk or other sealant over the old liner. Then lay the new liner in and refill. The sealant will create pockets that prevent a single-layer puncture in the new liner from running out the old hole (assuming you don't puncture it in the same place. It works like the sectional hull of the Titanic was supposed to work - isolating the leak to a specific section and not allowing it to move.

You should really get a rubber liner if your looking to do it properly, rubbish bagd etc.. will not work very well and the water will drain away. Clay is waterproof so if you back the bottom and sides with clay this will help, but I wouldn't recommend filling it up with water just with clay, if your looking to have fish in there etc.. it will not do them much good. If I were you I'd get a custom made rubber liner, it could be quite expensive but surly if your making a big pond like that, its best to do it properly

when i worked for a pet shop we installed ponds and when the liners weren't long enough and we had to use two liners, we would use a certain kind of tape to connect the liners together, using a tire repar kit probably won't hold under water. also if you have fish in it the epoxy might kill them. i don't quite remember the name of the tape but it was a rubber type tape maybe check your local home depot in the roofing section or check with some landscaping companies that install ponds and see what they suggest.

If you have found the leak but still have water try cleaning the area and getting butyl tape. It sticks to itself and the liner and is moldable and removable. We use it to seal leaks in pool light conduit under water. A pool store will have to order it for you and it is made by Anderson Leak Detection products.

Assuming the pond is now free from water, I would suggest getting hold of a cycle puncture repair kit and using that on the leak.

you can go to any pool store and get a "pool liner" patch kit. Very cheap and the glue is not affected by the water. I works really well.

Home repair stores sell patch kits that work pretty well. In the pond and pump section.

You need to know if the liner is made from neoprene or pvc/vinyl. If you know the maker, contact them for a repair kit.
