"Imagine" is a utopian song performed by John Lennon, which appears on his 1971 album, Imagine. Although originally credited solely to Lennon, in recent years Yoko Ono's contribution to the song has become more widely acknowledged. The song was produced by Phil Spector.
"Imagine" is widely considered as one of the greatest songs of all time. In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine voted "Imagine" the third greatest song of all time.[1] Former U.S. president Jimmy Carter said, "In many countries around the world — my wife and I have visited about 125 countries — you hear John Lennon's song 'Imagine' used almost equally with national anthems."[2]
In the book Lennon in America, written by Geoffrey Giuliano, Lennon commented that the song was "an anti-religious, anti-nationalistic, anti-conventional, anti-capitalistic song, but because it's sugar-coated, it's accepted."[3]
The lyrics were thought to be inspired by Lennon's hopes for a more peaceful world, though their origins are not known for certain. In 1963 Lennon penned the lyrics to "I'll Get You" with an opening verse of, "Imagine I'm in love with you, it's easy cause I know." The first verse of "Imagine" would seem to be a reworking of this. But the song's refrain may have been partly inspired by Yoko Ono's poetry, in reaction to her childhood in Japan during World War II. According to The Guardian, primordial versions of the song's refrain can be found in her 1965 book Grapefruit, where she penned lines such as, "imagine a raindrop" and "imagine the clouds dripping."[4]

Basically all the reasons that people don't get along. If they weren't there we could live better. No religion, Imagine all the People(Muslims, Christians, Jews...) all living as one. As basically all the wars of the past have been about some religious or cultural Clash. From the crusades to Iraq we have been fighting over who's god is the best.

It's basically about taking a look at what it would be like if we could all get along IN SPITE OF our differences; whether it involves differences of opinions on religion, politics, or physical differences such as race, ethic background, lifestyles, etc...
Contrary to what some believe, there's nothing sugar coated about it. In this song, John blatantly addresses various issues that keep people from living in peace with one another.

It is about the new system of living, on paradise earth, where there is no other religion but one. Where everyone lives in peace, he knew that only 144,000 would have the heavenly calling and that the rest of the world would be living on earth. At the time of his death he was studying religion with Jehovah's Witness, the song is about their hopes and faith. This is not a well known fact. As his family has done their best to hide this fact.

It's about what it's about.
He's asking all listeners to try and imagine what the world would be like if things were different than the way they are right now.

His dislike of the vietnam war, politics, religion, and the world around him. It's like his want for there to be a world where everyone can live hand-in-hand without violence or killing. Also for the United States who didn't take kindly to his residence here and later tried time and time again to have him deported back then.
