Quite well put. This administration has fought accountability tooth and nail. We keep hearing that the Iraqui government has been given benchmarks but for the most part they remain unidentified. Any congressional benchmarks are considered interference with military operations.
At the same time we hear that the Iraqui government must accept more responsabillity. However, when they make decisions, such as opposing the system of walled off neighborhoods, we argue that we are doing what is best and try to ignore their opinions. This administration has even ignored the opinions of the task force it appointed to identify the problems in Iraq. Anyone here with a different opinion is quickly labeled 'unAmerican'.

Social programs.. like welfare? You're comparing War to welfare? okay... So you think we should leave the Iraqis alone lest they become even more dependent on us?
That's a good point; the Iraqis are, for all intents and purposes, a bunch of children too busy fighting amongst each other because of different religions/ethnicities to accomplish anything, much less secure they're own country. I fail to see, however how us leaving would help the situation. I would rather have the US "controlling" Iraq and dumping our money into it, then to have Iran and Syria fight over it (along with the inner struggle between Kurd/Arab and Sunni/Shia and Kurd/Turks) and have that whole region unstable and potentially very dangerous. Gas prices would inflate, and I believe eventually, whether Syria or Iran won, we will have another Extreme Islamic attack (extreme describing the type of Islam, not the type of attack) on innocent civilians in the US. This also allows us to have a foothold in the Middle Eastern region just in case the Palestinians decide to get uppity with Israel.

Not a valid analogy Pip but close. The overwhelming complaint about social welfare is the "system" of dependence it creates. Helping a person get back up on their feet is a noble and wholly vital thing for us as a people and government to do. It is the continued "support" which is egregious. The families that are living solely for "they wefair chek" and are breeding more and more to perpetuate the cycle are the overriding objection to our welfare system.
What ya need to do is:
A) Get them out of their current negative situation: Off the streets, out of the abusive living situation, whatever. Sounds alot like ousting Sadaam.
B) Give them a safe place to stay with some food maybe some clothes and get them on a path to find a sustaining income. Or rebuild Iraqi infastructure, set up a system of government and make the country safe.
If we continue to bail them out then we will be creating dependence.

I'm not sure that war supporters don't agree that accountability is needed. I support the war effort but everyone needs accountability. I think this administration has done a poor job of public relations. That being said, it doesn't matter whether or not you think we were right or wrong for going in to Iraq. The problem needs to be fixed before we leave.

I love the idea of forcing the Iraqis to step it up and take care of themselves, but given the current situation with Iran (both sending in bombers and IEDs AND the fact that they are building a nuke), I don't think that Iraq could hold it's own against Islamic regimes that surround it. It's kind of like defending a candle on a windy day. You need a bonfire before you can trust that it can stand on it's own.

What flipping war are you talking about? There is no war in Iraq except the civil war that the insurgents have created and that has nothing to do with the American soldiers but we are helping the innocent Iraqis by being there. The insurgents are murdering the Iraqis and if we weren't there, you'd have a lot more innocent people murdered than there is now. People just don't get it. We aren't there to fight their civil war for them rather to put fear in the insurgents so they won't murder the innocents in Iraq.

What we are doing over there goes far beyond any social program, we are rebuilding a nation, creating a government, building infrasctructure, providing security, and fighting Al Queda. It is a military operation, NOT a social program. Bad comparison.
We cons are also ALL for social programs as long as they arent too big and are well regulated.

You're comparing apples to oranges. In this country you're talking about social programs being offered to people who would rather collect free money from the government than work for a living to support themselves and their families.
In Iraq, you have people who have been ruled with an iron fist by a dictator for the last 30 years. You can't expect them to know how to run their own country after only 3-4 years of constant violence, uncertainty, and amidst a civil war between the shiites and the sunnis.
Last but not least.......if you think things over there are bad now, how do you think they would be once the US left? And who would be blamed for that? You guessed it.....the UNITED STATES.

I am a conservative and I agree completely. While most conservatives you talk to support the war, your hard pressed to find many outside the administration who support the management of the war. The basis of real conservatism is responsibility and accountability, its just not always practiced.

i don't think the war in iraq is about social programs. it's about freedom. unfortunately the people don't seem to want it as much as USA and others want them to have it. i guess living with fear of torture and losing loved ones for no reason is a better way of life for them.
