Is capitalism compatible with the environment, or does one of them have to give? What would a sustainable economy look like? Should we re-think economic growth? How do we make the economy more environmentally-friendly?

Search on Pennsylvania Dutch or Mennonite. The lifestyle of these people is the closest thing I have ever seen to an ecologically-sustainable economy/society.

That's a superb question. I believe any form of economy CAN be ecologically-sustainable economy. It just has to be in the minds of the economists (and polticians). There should be politicians willing to listen to the public and take decisions based on that. Money making should be a healthy process. People today want to be rich as fast as they can and that's where the major problem lies. Stop going so fast, think about the environment and make money in a healthy way.

We have to start valuing the environment. Capitalism as it is practiced in the United States is not compatible with the environment. It emphasizes profit with no need for responsibility or regard for the environment or fellow citizens. Until adding value to your world is valued by more/all people, it seems that people and the environment will continue to be exploited in the name of profits.

Germany, one of the richest countries in the world, is already light years ahead of the USA in environmental issues. People work to live, take 8 -12 weeks vacation a year, take care of the environment, don't waist alone 40% of the natural resources like the USA does and have most likely the best standard of living in terms of life quality. 92% of Germans said, they are generally happy (USA 28%).
