The only good answer is this one , set your display for screen saver after about 5/10 min, olso select power option to shut down LCD after 30.min. as fro the hard drive its better to leave on or off, as this will cause the drive to age faster. it is like a car engine the most damage is at start up , when the discs are spinning they kinda float in air as a cushion

I not think it matter. Mine is set to shut of my LCD Display and HDD so it not spinning. When I move the mouse everything start up. I not use Hibernate.
Sometimes, leaving a Computer on for long periods it may get stuff running from your use that once you close the program there may still be something going. I not know best way to explain. But, say in 6-12 months you may notice things not running as well, and a re-boot clean it up. Many years ago when I worked for a Computer Company I left all my test equipment on 24-7, computer, oscilloscope, volt meter etc. all I ever did was turn my displays down with the Bright control. This equipment was on for 2-3 years, never turned off. When the Technician would come to re-calibrate our test equipment, my stuff was always on the mark.

my laptop is on at least 8 hours a day.
I ran one Sony Vaio for 3 years like that before I upgraded. The unit still works and another associate is using it today with no problems.

Most has to do with MTBF ratings (Mean Time between failures)

yes. you should....the longer you leave it on the more dust clogs the system...you wont notice it in the short term, but in the long run...you will.
most laptops last about 7 years before they finally crap out...so keeping it cool is very important...the cooler your HD the longer it will last. That goes without saying you dont throw your laptop around. another thing that kills your laptops components is starting up your computer. i recommend using standby. although you shouldnt have to worry too much about that....cuz 6 years down the road, you'll be selling your laptop

It shouldn't damage anything except your electric bill, if you're going to leave it on all the time, then you should use the power save options to conserve electricity.
