Okay. I went to see a doctor at the Naval Hospital *my husband is a marine* about a referal for a breast reduction. I have a full DD and major back problems, not to mention the rashes that come along from it. I went in to see him AFTER doing a lot of research as to whether tricare would cover the surgery and what you had to do to get it approved. The other women were saying that it only took a few days for approval and that all they had to do was go see a doctor. So, this doctor was a real jerk in the first place. Hardly looked, gave me NO time to explain what I was going through. The only thing he said was that I should go to physical therapy (been there done that AND I told him that) and that I should take motrin and tylenol (don't you think I tried that?) and cold and hot compresses (and again...been done). He then told me that it would have just been a cosmetic surgery. How is it cosmetic. I go through hell because of them. I need some advice. Was he right?

Okay, thanks for letting me know it wasn't just me. I thought I was overreacting. Since my hubby's in the military and they assign doctors, can I see a different doctor?

No he wasn't right. Having large breasts can cause serious spinal problems. He's a jerk. Insist on seeing another dr.

I am from Canada - so if you are from the States, I don't know how it works there. Here if you have back problems due to too big of breasts - you can get a reduction covered by medical care and is NOT considered cosmetic surgery unless you are looking for an augmentation! My sister had a reduction and is now a C-cup and she loves her new breasts. If its possible to see a different physician - I would suggest that if you are in that much agony.

Hi, I'm the wife of a retired marine, and I was just wondering what type of doctor you saw? Was it family practice, internal medicine? I don't get seen on a base, but I would find a supervisor in the hospital and explain what happened. I used to work in a doctor's office and breast reduction is usually cosmetic, though there are times when it will be covered. If necessary, change doctors so you can be comfortable discussing things with him/her so you don't have to go through what you did.

I believe he was in the wrong. If you've tried other conservative options, it's time for him to recognize that... that and your surgery should be covered under medical expenses. Emphasize to him that getting a breast reduction now can save Tricare money in the long run when you wind up needing surgery due to a herniated disc in your neck from the prolonged forces you are having at the throasic spine.

Unless you have another docs statement saying that it is the cause of your problems he has to call it cosmetic because it is elective surgery and not manditory. What you need to do is go to your regular doc and get a statement from him saying that your problems are specifically caused by your large breasts and that all other option have failed and that surgery is required. He was not right to be rude but he is right in that without a docs signed note saying you need this for your health it is just cosmetic surgery in his eyes. Hope this helps.

No to me cosmetic is to have enlargements not to have a reduction there is medical reasons why you wish a reduction sore back rashes etc etc go get a 2nd opinion as you have also tried everything and this is not working so reduction is your last option hope you get yourself sorted out soon x

Go see another doctor. With regular health care, outside of the military, a reduction is covered 100%. You should have this surgery if it is bothering you.

No, he is a jerk. Even if it is cosmetic, that's your business. But I know this problem can cause a lot of medical problems and discomfort too. Go to another doctor! This guy should have at least listened to you and maybe even referred you to a plastic surgeon. Good luck.

Is there any way you can get a second opinion? I doubt that he's the only doctor on staff there...As for his rudeness, you can always report him to the chief of medicine. There's no way and reason why he shoudl have treated you the way he did.
