ADD all the numbers and DIVIDE it BY the number of the numbers you are adding.
Examples:
If you want the average of a, b, c, d & e
ADD a + b + c + d + e and then DIVIDE by the number of numbers you are adding which in this case is 5 (because a is 1 number, b is 1 number, c is 1 number, d is 1 number and e is 1 number.
So the average of a,b,c,d & e is
(a+b+c+d+e)/5
Example 2
Find the average of 3, 5, 6 & 8
(3+5+6+8)/4 (because there are 4 numbers that you are adding)
= 22/4
=5.5 ===> is the average

An average is when 2 or more numbers are classified together and then divided by the amount of numbers that are a part of your problem. Example:
8+6+23+44+32+12+29=154
take 154 and divided it by the numbers of your problem and here it is 7 154/7=22 is the average of the 7 numbers.

add the numbers in the question and then divide that answer by the number of numbers in the question.
ie. 15, 9, 12, 10.
15+9+12+10= 46
46/4 (4 numbers, 15, 9, 12, 10) = 11.5 <-- your average
