At one time it stood for Agricultural and Mechanical....today I believe it is just the letters no longer with the meaning.
Like Texas A&I University (now Texas A&M - Kingsville) was once Texas College of Arts and Industries. When they gained University status it became just Texas A&I University. Where I was graduated. Many people are still very upset about the A&M name now used at Texas A&I.
