What are you doing when he says this? You can go to dictionary.com to look up the word, and you can read books on relationships, setting boundaries and treating each other with respect if you don't want to provide details.
Contrary to some extreme views expressed on here, there are women who are chronically disrespectful (and I hope you are not one of them), and you can't earn their respect because they generally disrespect men, but hopefully men don't marry those if they have any self-respect. I once dated a woman who referred to her ex-husband as "the idiot" (very mature, don't you think), never ceased to talk about him and in the most derrogitory terms, she was bossy, and she flirted with other men, so it didn't exactly take a rocket scientist to figure out she didn't respect men even in the general sense. She had problems. Again, I hope you aren't one of these, or your life is going to be quite difficult.

LOL I've been where you are! You have to get to know your husband, and learn to understand what he means by 'respect' I have a feeling that you are like me, you are not intentionally disrespecting him, but you tend to do things differently and think differently, etc... He therefore tends to think that you are being disrespectful. I was always bad about forgetting to do things... I am a forgetful person... but he would think that I was purposefully not doing something he had asked me to do. The main thing is... you two need to communicate better, and more often. You should LEARN each other. If you try, and he tries you can get through this.

"Respect is a psychological construct involving interaction. This interaction is positive in that to be held in great respect infers admiration and good opinion, the state of being honoured, admired or well thought of.
The cognitive aspects of respect are still under current study, thus the complete cognitive aspects of respect are unknown at this point in time. As respect is defined as a psychological construct, further studies into the affective, cognitive, and emotional components of this construct are being carried out to determine.
Respect is not simply an attitude based on experience. Furthermore, there is no evidence that respect exists in relationships outside of humans. The concept of respect predates, and does not rely on, the existence of the concept of rights. Respect is sometimes loosely used as the synonym for politeness or manners, though these are behaviors showing respect. Even though respect is an attitude, respect will consist of cultural specific behaviors. Intercultural differences in behaviors, self-perception and outward appearance may result in the unintentional appearance of disrespect."

A person has to earn respect, it just doesn't happen.
Respect can mean quite a few things: polite, kind, helpful,....
But speaking from experience when a bf would say that to me, it really meant that he wanted to "control" me and if I didn't listen to all his crazy ideas and etc....he would get mad and start whinning about how I didn't respect him.

Respect means that you truly love and care about him, look out for him, take care of him when necessary, listen, support and cheer him on, and mostly just spend happy times with him and be there for him in general.

If you're a ******, or putting him down about his job or things he does or doesn't do, that could be a hint. If he does what he can to provide for the home and you and you're not appreciative, then that may be another clue.

Ask him. He sounds like he doesn't know what it is. Respect is earned not forced. He may think obediance and submissivness are respect. They aren't.
