I have 2 water ponds and they both have some algae growing in them. the algae is natural for ponds. the fish and the sucker fish will help with the algae coming back. I have had these ponds for over 15 years and have found by trial and error that chemicals are not worth the expense. a good pump and filter system along with a UV light system will help cut down on the algae. I have also gotten a few apple snails and they eat the algae that is growing on the sides of your pond. the algae is a natural part of nature. algae shows that you have a healthy pond and should not be messed with. whenever I have changed the water in my pond I have never cleaned the algae, it is almost a must have for your pond to be healthy. I would say that a few plants will give your pond shade, what I have is a canopy that I put up over my pond before the hot summer sun sets in. the sun isn't completely sheltered from my pond just at it's hottest time of the day. my pond gets the morning and late afternoon sun that is all that is required. be patient and try a few of the items I have suggested. good luck!!!

GO ask at a pet store. They have all kinds of products you can put into tanks, and some specially made for ponds and tanks in high sun areas. They kill the bad algae. After the pond is cleaned out, buy a few pleco fish, they should keep it pretty clean.

The problem is that you have no plants. You need shading plants, oxygenating plants, and filtering plants. Once you put the proper ones in, with the fish, the algae problem will almost be eliminated. In times of extreme heat it will reoccur, but will go when temps drop back down. I have 2, and have had them for 5 years. Algae is just another plant.

All water holding devices will get algae if chemicals are not added. Same as a pool. Check with a pool sales place since you will be adding fish.
