I have a friend flying from Italy to Heathrow Terminal 1, then catching flight to Australia couple of hours later from Heathrow Terminal 4.

Will I be able to meet my friend? I thought that when you transfer flights you have to stay "inside" the departures areas?

It's not really recommended if there isn't such a long connection time. The shortest connection time for changing flights & terminals at Heathrow is about 1h30m. To meet you, your friend would have to come through Arrivals and therefore Immigration & Customs. Then, when going to get the next flight, your friend would have to go through security. Both times this could take a really, really long time (it has taken me over an hour to get through security before now) and I wouldn't recommend your friend do this unless he/she had at least 3hrs connection time.

You also have to consider whether your friend would be allowed into the UK. If your friend isn't an EU national, he/she may require a visa to enter the UK. Even though your friend is connecting onto a flight, he/she must formally enter the UK in order to meet you so if there is likely to be a visa required to enter the country, I would just write the whole thing off as impossible as it could take forever.

This is the only way you & your friend could meet. It is not possible for you to go to the gate and meet your friend - you would have to be in possession of a valid ticket & boarding pass, so unless you are planning on flying somewhere yourself from terminal 4 you would not be allowed beyond security under ANY circumstances.

Yes it is possible, however, you have to go through customs and immigration into a common area. After your meeting you have to go back in as a ticketed passenger, go through customs and immigration again and maybe miss your flight.
The friend cannot enter without ticket and must also go through security.

Your friend would normally remain airside (in transit) so if friend did want to meet you then she would have to go through immigration and clear customs just to see you.

Couldn't you go to Australia too? *LOL*
