Grab their attention. Say something like "Unfortunately, Victor Frankenstein was the first biomedical engineer." Then go on to state a definition of biomedical engineering and why your assertion is correct. Then go on to state why it is important to understand bioengineering in a positive way. Then explain what you yourself hope to get out of this experience.

Good luck.

Personal statements should be about a page long. Most personal statements convey a story that has some association with the career or study you're wishing to pursue.

It tells the reasons why you want to and should be involved with a specific program.

So, let's say you wanted to be a Medical Doctor and was about to apply to medical school you would write a personal statement that talked about how (this is hypothetical) you helped give first aid to a little kid when you were younger and it made you want to be a doctor.

And, contrary to what some people are saying, it's NOTHING like a resume.
