With an automatice transmission, the OD button allows you to turn of the overdrive gear while you are towing something heavy like a boat. If you don't do that you can just ignore the button, but if you tow heavy things around, turn your OD off before getting started.

Towing in OD causes the transmission to work harder than it is designed to do and can cause damage. But if you are not towing, don't worry about it.

The O/D buton is to turn the overdrive off. You may want to do that if you are going down a steep hill to aid with engine braking, or if you are pulling a trailer and going up a hill and want to keep the engine revs up. Without the OD you will have more acceleration but the gas mileage will suffer. good luck

OD gives you one extra gear (like a 4th or 5th gear to lower RPM's thus saving gas and allowing you to go faster at will).... Thats old thouhgh, I belive now they are all intelligent and always use the OD (or highest) gear at highway speeds to save gas.

Overdrive is another gear once you are up to cruising speed you can switch to overdrive. It uses less fuel but you have less or no acceleration.
