I bought a long medium size fresh water fish. Its bright yellow in color and cost me around US$3. I know this is silly but in midst of excitement (Im new!), I forgot to ask what fish that is. Im trying to read up on it so I can know my fish better but I do not know where to start now. I tried googling for pics of the fish but to no avail This is the best I can do: http://www.lostrivers.ca/points/yellowfish.gif Ok, ok, so it doesnt help much! lol.... Anyone has any clue??

It sounds like a Cichlid. Try also searching for Malawian Cichlid because I think those come in yellow also...

Cute picture!! Go back to the store where you purchased the fish and ask or call the store and explain what it looks like. You will want to know what it is that you put into your tank. Is it a community fish, or what? It is better to know that what you put into your tank will be able to get along with your other fish.
Not all fish should be in the same fish tank. Some are community fish, meaning that they all get along with each other. They are peacefull fish and do not hurt each other. Then there a fish that will fight other fish, bite/nip the other fish.
Make sure that when you buy new fish that you are investigating what type of fish you are putting in your tank, so that they will all be able to live together in peace.

Yellow...
If it looks like a long goldfish then it could be a koi.
Most likely a freshwater fish if you don't know about it (saltwater takes a lot of care, $$$, and planning)
What are the fins like? Are they wavy like a betta? Short like a chichlid? Outspread like a goldfish? Upright and sharp like a bala shark?
Go to www.petco.com and look under fish, then aquatic life. They have many of their fish for sale on it and I'm sure you can pick it out. The section it would most likely be under is Freshwater, but if you don't find it there look under pond fish. Look more at the shape of your fish instead of the color, because what you have may be ver common in another color. Like a Molly. Many who look for something with spots (spotted mollie) online may only come across black mollies, but they are the same thing, just a different color.

It is probably an electric yellow but since you said its 3 bucks, it is possibly a gold gourami. You should send a photo, it would help us better if you are serious.

Please, please, please don't buy fish unless you have done you research FIRST. It's dumb to purchase any thing living without knowing how to care for it. If you can't identify a fish by it's Latin name,(that's the only true way to identify an animal) then how can you possibly give it the care it requires? Fishkeeping is a responsibility, and should be taken seriously. To do otherwise is cruel.

Oh, I'm sorry...I thought you were going to "eat" the fish, lol. I found you this, lol. http://www.nature-discovery.com/home/nd1/page_3_34/poster_of_trout_salmon__char_of_north_america_fema.html
Now, this will be a good sight to put in your favorites, as you learn /build your new aquarium. Cool sight. I kept it, too. I never would have found that if you hadn't asked that question, lol. Thanks!

Is this it?

Cichlids are somewhat aggressive and should be kept in cichlid-only tanks. (Even "more peaceful" cichlids are still not as peaceful as community fish. They will end up pestering and/or killing most peaceful freshwater community fish.)

Could be a chinclid? or...? It is probably easiest to go back to the store where you bought it, and look into its tank to see what it is called, there are probably more there, or a title on the tank.
