It's worth remembering that the best tyres for wear are not usually the best for grip. I'd also echo the suggestion about getting the tracking checked and making sure you're using the right pressures first. They're on here, if it helps : http://www.thetyrepressuremonitor.com/tyrepressures_volkswagen.html

If the rear tyres are fine it maybe the front tyres have been off balance ie tracking or the wrong tyre pressure. If these are correct it maybe the way that you are driving(no Offence)

But as to tyres Pirelli tyres are good. expensive but last well

generally the more you pay for your tyres the better they last my missus has a golf gt tdi and her tyres are the same. it also depends on your driving style harsh braking and acclerating can increase tyre wear no matter how far you drive

Michelin were always the hardest wearing tyre by far but they also produced more road noise

Each tire maker has different grades of tires. Look on the sidewall of the tire and check out the wear rating. The higher the number, the harder the tire is. The harder it is, the longer it will wear. You may be giving up some traction and handling with the harder tire, but if long wearing is what you are
