There are several answers to this question.
First, the English language is difficult. So many words have weird spellings. Their origin is from other languages and the like.
Second, there are so many words that sound or look similar. To, too, two For, four, etc
Third, people just don't care.
Fourth, 'internet speak' has cheapened the idea of writing and spelling well. U no wht I mn?
Fifth, they are just too lazy to fix it or to learn to spell properly. Any attempts to correct spelling, especially in forums, usually draws insults and statements like "the forums aren't a place for good Enlish."
It is pittiful really. Whatever the reason, there seems to be a gradual dumbing down of spelling in the U.S., the internet especially.

Spelling isn't emphasised any more in the educational curriculum. I remember a time when spelling in schoolwork was corrected by all teachers, not just by those teaching languages. Whether it was 'accommodation', 'parallelepiped' or 'liquefy', it would be corrected if wrong.
This question was asked recently, and had achieved almost a hundred answers when I last managed to check. I have been trying to find how things were progressing, but have come to the conclusion that the question has for some inexplicable reason been deleted. The same has happened to other questions I remember on grammar and use of apostrophes. Surely these questions are all right in Words and Wordplay.

I can't, and have no idea why, but I always run the spelling checker, I don't fault the speller (unlike william_a_channell's smart comment) it seems to me that some people just don't get it, spelling checkers have been a god send. I do find with the checker I write a great deal more, and now find a lot fewer errors.
