I don't understand it. There are people homeless and starving in America. Taking condoms to Africa is ridiculous. I thought Oprah was taking care of Africa? Those Katrina victims should all be in a house by this time and they're still out on the streets looking for food. Doesn't seem right, does it?

you know at the risk of getting a lot of thumbs down....
I have to say... not to take away from the Katrina victims went through... but how long do we have to take up money for these guys... I don't mind giving a hand up... (and I did give) but I have a real problem with these people that expect a hand out.
I live in North Carolina and we have been through many...devastating hurricanes... Fran in 1996 being one of the most costly... when it roared through it took out power lines across the whole state... Floyd roared through the state in 1999 bringing with it the most devastating flooding the state had seen in 500 years...and I am sorry... I did not see this out pouring of love for us... ... you know why... we picked ourselves up and we took care of our own... we didn't wait for the government to show up. So forgive me if I think that by now... we should not be still giving money to Katrina funds.
Now on the other hand ... charity is about giving and you should give with a open heart... and we all know that hunger and poverty is everywhere in the world and I think the idol gives back is... in theory a good thing... I just hope the moneys get to the people that actually NEED it.

Wow...your condom comment just shows how immature you are about issues like this.
The people who are donating are just a FEW groups, giving SOME of their money to a COUPLE foundations for ONE show. There are many foundations out there for Katrina and Africa. Why can't people give to two foundations or even more? Can I ask what causes you donate to, if you donate at all? I donate to Save Darfur, Breast Cancer foundations, Project Red and One. Do you think I should cut some of those out and just give to one? It is not for anybody to say which cause is more important, that is why some people (good people) help out what they can, when they can, for whoever they choose. I don't even watch American Idol, but I think what they are doing is great.

First of all, your last part of the statement is just ridiculous..
Secondly, they are a charity that has been born from The One Campaign which is all about ending poverty and disease in Africa. The money is being divided accordingly.
I don't understand why people cry about charities that they probably don't even donate to. The American Red Cross should have spent all of the money that we donated to the Katrina victims to the actual Katrina victims instead of putting the money into the general fund. When you donate to a cause like the One Campaign, you know where your money is going to.

First of all, American Idol is not just donating to Africa, they are also donating to rural Kentucky because of the growing illiteracy, Atlanta GA because of the homeless problem, and New Orleans because of Hurricane Katrina.
Regardless of how things are here it is not nearly as bad as Darfur or other places in South Africa. I think what they are doing is wonderful. No one donation can take care of EVERYTHING that needs to fixed but at least they are doing something. Another thing, don't complain about charities that you probably don't give to yourself. Do some research about Darfur and then feel guilty about your question!

I agree that a show called "American Idol" should give back to American causes first if they want to give.
They have been trying to get people in Africa to use condoms for YEARS to no avail. It's a shame, but I don't know that anyone can ever cut completely through the cultural differences there.

Its 1 of those you can't satisfy everybody situations. If they just helped Katrina victims...some group would slam them for not addressing the starving in Africa...so on and so forth.
Taking condoms to Africa would be a waste of time. If they wanted to control the population growth....they should offer $$$$ to individuals for voluntary sterilization.

I don't understand the problem here. I'm sorry, but the problems in our country pale in comparison to what's going on in Africa. The One Campaign IS helping out people in our country as well. This is not a socialist economy. There's always going to be someone at the bottom as well as the top.
Oooops! I said that totally wrong at first. I meant to say that Africa's problems are so much bigger than ours...see edited answer above!

because they're trying to give to everyone around the U.S. and Africa. There are other orginizations for Katrina victims. They can't just give to one group of people
