Hi Nikonan21 - I answered another of your questions about life in Cape Town a while back, about being a mixed race couple. I lived in Cape Town for four years and lived in Claremont, Rondebosch, and Milnerton Ridge. I liked each neighborhood I lived in. The 'Southern Suburbs' are the wealthiest, most sought after suburbs. See the post by the user 'london.oval' above. He/She lists them there. That is where many of the best schools are located (from what I have heard - I don't have any kids). They are very nice, big houses, green (they get alot of rain being on the east side of the mountain), and close to shops, to town. They are also the most expensive place to live, maybe only slightly behind the suburbs that are in the 'City Bowl' (Tamboerskloof, Oranjezicht, Gardens, Vredehoek). If you want some place that is less expensive you can try the 'Blouberg' area, being Milnerton, Sunset Beach, Milnerton Ridge, Table View and even farther north. I don't know about the schools there. I liked living in Milnerton Ridge, the rent was much cheaper (I rented a house there for the price of an apartment in the Southern Suburbs), I was two minutes away from the beach, plenty of shops, and only a few minutes farther away from downtown. I think each neighborhood is basically about the same in terms of safety, the only problem I ever had in Cape Town was my car being broken into. I found that my neighbors were as friendly as I was to them, that is if you reach out to them, they will to you as well. It was easier to meet people when living in an apartment in Rondebosch or the smaller house in Milnerton Ridge. When I lived in larger houses in Claremont or Rondebosch, everyone is so far away, behind their walls, its hard to get to know them unless I suppose you try really hard.

You are welcome to send me an email and I can give even more info, its hard to give detailed answers through this system. Click on my username and there should be a link to email me. Enjoy Cape Town, I sure did.

Cheers,
Jason

I come from the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town (around the back of Table Mountain)

Depending on how much you want to pay - good schools nearby

Bishops Court
Constantia and Constantiaberg
Meadowridge and Bergvliet
Top end of Wynberg
Lakeside
Tokai
Newlands and Travato Estate
Top end of Claremont

That should keep you busy for a while - enjoy your stay in Cape Town

The safer suburbs in CT are the ones that are in the outlaying areas. If you go north Blouberg, and Bellville are good places from what i hear, but in the South where i lived, Fishhoek, Simonstown and Glenhurst are the best. I am also fond of Lakeside and Kalkbay (both of which have very decent rental rates and have good schools). Simonstown which is the furtherest from CT central is Approx a 40 min drive to the city, but it is a beautifully scenic drive so its not so bad. Good Luck!!

P.S There is crime everywhere, but in my opinion it can be avoided. Get a decent car alarm and definantly get a gear lock for your car. Make sure that where ever you live it has a security gate which you should keep locked at all times and dont go into public areas with excessive jewellary , NEVER ever leave your valuables on seats of car, always stuff them under seats where they are not visable(or in boot/trunk). It is perfectly easy to live there and not be a victim . I did for years and so has all my family!!

Constantia in the Western cape. Be prepared for a large price tag though. My friend lives in a really posh area of Constantia in a security estate but still got robbed one time. No where in SA is it totally safe. But I'd say Constantia and Stellenbosch, Durbanville are quite safe.

I am a South African living in New Zealand at the moment (not permanently). I loved the Northern Suburbs - Edgemead, Bothasig and Durbanville in particular. We lived around there and we really enjoyed it.

BTW, "Young Lass" - you stated that South Africa is a "very dangerous" country, "worse than Nigeria". Did you know that South Africa is sitting with a massive problem regarding illegal Nigerian immigrants? Are you aware that a large amount of South Africa's crime is due to the Nigerians who ILLEGALLY come into our country and control a large part of the drug trade, illegal weaponry, run crime syndicates and have destroyed one of the best parts of Cape Town (being Sea Point/Green Point region)? So if Nigeria is "safer" than South Africa, it's only because all their criminals have fled to SA!

i love cape town so much!
i've lived in Observatory, just out of the city, and it's a lovely little place.
Camps Bay area is nice too, but more expensive.
Table View has some nice houses too, with amazing views of the mountain.
people will tell you it's nasty and dangerous, but it's just like any large city. i felt safer there alone at night than i have ever done in England (even in the small towns here).
good luck - i wish i could get back out there sooner!! x

I am a South African Citizen, currently residing in Mossel Bay 4 hours from Cape Town check out.... www.ultimateguide.co.za.
We are not a primitive people we do not walk around in loin cloths.!!!!!

I agree Cape Town could be dangerous if you go looking for trouble, same as any other place in the world, yes I have travelled know what I am taling about!!!!

The Better suburbs in Cape Town are Constantia, Durbanville, Bellville,
listed from most expensive to least.

And please don't walk down the road with a camera around your neck pointing at stuff especially not late at night, someone is going to have a go at you.

If you want to know of a place that is dangerous try Joburg!!

Have Fun

You could try Oranjezicht as a possible starting point. I don't know the present situation there as I was there in the early 1980's but it was good, safe & polite then.
Wish you well!
