It's like I stand there and will myself off the ground and up I go, sometimes like a bird but other times it's like I'm on an invisible armchair with a motor just hovering above the ground! Is this "Lucid Dreaming"?

Brilliant whatever it is!:-)

.....This is not lucid dreaming, but it's one of the best dreams you can have. It is about the feeling of confidence that you can do something that's viewed as impossible by everyone else. You have the feeling you can tackle very challenging tasks and succeed. Good for you!

Flying dreams fall under a category of dreams where you become aware that you are dreaming, known as lucid dreaming. Many dreamers have described the ability to fly in their dreams as an exhilarating, joyful, and liberating experience.

If you are flying with ease and enjoying the scene and landscape below, then it suggests that you are on top of a situation. You have risen above something. It may also mean that you have gained a different perspective on things. Flying dreams and the ability to control your flight is representative of your own personal sense of power.

Having difficulties staying in flight indicates a lack of power in controlling your own circumstances. You may be struggling to stay aloft and stay on course. Things like power lines, trees, or mountains may further obstruct your flight. These barriers represent a particular obstacle or person who is standing in your way in your waking life. You need to identify who or what is hindering you from moving forward.

If you are feeling fear when you are flying or that you feel that you are flying too high, then it suggests that you are afraid of challenges and of success.

In reality, we do not have the ability to fly. Thus such dreams may represent that which is beyond our physical limitations. In your mind, you can be anybody and do anything. Another way of interpreting flying dreams is that these dreams symbolize your strong mind and will. You feel undefeatable and nobody can tell you what you cannot do and accomplish. Undoubtedly these dreams leave you a great sense of freedom.

I love flying in my dreams! It's sooo euphoric and self controlling. I don't have a clue what flying in dreams mean but the thing the anonymous guy said above was pretty interesting.
Its quite hard sometimes though to start flying in dreams cos you constantly have to think 'come on fly fly..' n flap your arms really fast n then you just sort of hover over places. Its so thrilling n exciting. Ive always wanted to be a bird or a cat after i die.

YES!! And it is very rare, so enjoy and remember them. It is your mind celebrating while you are asleep! You have recently accomplished something important to you in real life. It's self-confidence even while you sleep! I was once in a large swing with long ropes (meaning a long, long swing) directly overtop my bed...felt this wonderful breeze in my face, and it lasted several minutes! That was very cool!
I have also had recurring dreams where I can make things move by looking at them with my eyes. I once chased some old women around with balloons in a large room, only by looking at them with my eyes!! I could control the balloons!! What Fun!! I have a feeling you are winning some video game........

I used to have this dream all the time. I remember having it as a child, and waking up CONVINCED I could fly. I think that it is the astral body leaving the physical body at night when we are in an altered state of consciousness that we experience as flying. On one occasion I was woken abruptly before I had 'landed' and in my dream I 'reeled' myself back into my body , as if my astral body was on a string like a kite. I read afterwards that the astral body is attached in this way by an ethereal cord like the umbilical cord, so that makes sense. Some people are able to 'journey' in their astral body deliberately, though it takes a lot of experience and understanding to do this safely. Some of the experiences people have on drugs are to do with the blurring of the divisions between realities, and can damage the astral body, leaving psychic 'holes' in it. This is why sometimes drug use can result in schizophrenic or disturbed mental behaviour as a long term effect.
