Well, when I write a tune, I start with whatever comes to me first. Sometimes I begin with a little meody that I have constructed and then flesh it out, adding by trying out different things. You have to play that ditty over and over and keep trying until something that you try hits you just right. Then I play that filled out melody a bunch of times, imagining what I want the rest of the accompaniment to sound like (drums, bass, etc.)
Alternatively, I sometimes come up with some lyrics that I like and just start singing them in as many different ways & styles as I can think of. Sometimes that is not very effective but once in a while I just get it right.
I know it's tough but keep at it, you'll get there. Be creative, let your talent find a way out! Good Luck.

Dude... you said you can play chords... and you know some pentatonics... that's really good.
but for writing a song... u need to know some of the things.
like... Progressions.
you know scales... take a pen & paper.
write down all the notes that you get from a specific scale... and those would be 12 notes.
now you have the 12 notes which can be played as a chord aswell.
So try to restrict your self to those 12 notes and make a best possible combination of chords that sounds good to you.
and if you want to switch the scale, then you'r talking abt the other level which makes you learn about the keys & stuff.
So focus on 12 notes... fret board is your's.
use your mind and creativity.

a few things...
If you cant sing and play guitar yet just try assigning words to certain chords while playing...
like if you strummed and sang
G G G G E E E E E
I went to the store To buy stuff
when writing lyrics i sing melodies over my guitar and just make sounds words dont come to me until later. after i dink around.
also if you buy a cheap microphone (like one from radioshack) you can hook it up to your computer, and then download a program called audacity for free. after you dink with the settings you can record multiple tracks. You may have to download something called asio for all to fix the settings too.
it is free really look for it.
I use it and it had helped me write
Also if you cant play and sing at the same time just record your guitar part and then sing over it randomly on another track until you find something you like. layering and experimenting is how iget a lot of stuff done.
A lot of people wont dmit it but they make there songs up from other people's ideas it is okay to take other peoples ideas because you can spin them and make something totally original. there are only so many notes to play you know. i used to play other peoples songs until i created something of my own from there and then it becomes completly unrecogniseable.
also common formula to write a song
intro
verse
chorus
verse
chorus
bridge
chorus
end

A song is just a poem set to a tune. Write about something you know. Then try singing it.
For instance if I was to right a song right now it might go like...
If Laurie walks by my desk one more time.
With her nice, round, sweet behind.
Gonna throw her on my desk with all my stuff.
Gonna go dive'n in that muff.

try playing a few sequence of chords that is listenable and try to sing something or just humming to get the feeling of the tune.
Remember to stop controlling yourself, meaning just sing whatver comes to ur mind so that u can get a smooth sound.
happy writing!

it is bad enough that people in foreign countries are taking our jobs, but now they want us to teach them how to do it.
