If the universe is infinite, then the answer to your question is also "infinite".

If the universe is finite, then the answer to your question is... approximately 100,000,000,000,000,000,000 plus or minus a few hundred billion :)

There is no way with current technology (or any imagined technology) to give an exact count, sorry :)

On a very slow news day in 2003, CNN reported that people at the Australian National University calculated that there were 70 sextillion stars in the known universe (that is 7 followed by 22 zeros.) Of course, the Aussies did not count that many, rather they observed the number of stars in a "strip" of the universe and extrapolated from that. I suppose it is one way of proposing a number, kind of like me counting the dandelions in my yard and making an estimate of the number of dandelions in the world (or in the universe) from that number.

There are an estimated 200 billion stars in our galaxy alone, according to Wikipedia. It's certainly in the region of billions. As for the total number of stars in the Universe, I don't think anyone can give you a precise number - it's likely to be unimaginably big. Just bear in mind that most stars "live" in galaxies such as the Milky Way (our galaxy) and that there are hundreds of millions of galaxies in the universe.
