Return the Buffalo, I like it more than Beef.

We need to nationally fund native heritage schools and summer programs.

Go to a Pow Wow.

Be able to name at least 10 groups of natives: Sioux, Dakota, Chippewa, Lakota, Algonquin, Peublo, Inuit, Ojibwa, Mohawk, and Cherokee. (off the top of my head)

Support Native Hunting Rights.

I have a bumpersticker with the Canadian, American flags and the flag of the iroquois confederacy, pictured here

with Friendship written underneath.

I also point out than many ideals of the American Government were "stolen" from the Iroquois.

Buy every Buffy Sainte Marie Album and piss on Lyndon B. Johnson's grave.

Donate to the St. Joesph school in South Dakota. My father's only charity.

I think the most important thing is to respect them and their heritage. I know everyone thinks that all Native Americans are rich from the casinos but that just isn't so. There are children on the reservations who go to bed hungry at night; there are elders who freeze to death in the winter for lack of heat for their homes; there are people still living in houses (if you can call them that) with dirt floors and no running water; and the medical problems caused by drugs, alcohol are killing the people. You'd be surprised at the number of young Native American people who kill themselves every day because of lack of opportunity for schools and jobs. Give to the organizations that are doing something to help these people. Check them out to make sure they are actually working for the people; not lining their own pockets with donations.

Encourage the youth to take courses in college to help better understand contemporary American Indian life would be my suggestion. The current political, social, and economic condition of most tribes have direct roots in federal Indian policy from the early 19th century that is still being used today. The average American does not know this because it is not taught to anyone, American Indian kids included, in our schools and is only taught in a handful of colleges. Nothing will be changed overnight and nothing will be solved by anyone "going back to Europe". Knowing today's situations and today's dilemmas and the history behind them is, I think, an appropriate way to begin to reach out.

What's done is done, the Europeans were ruthless but that was a long time ago. Money was thrown at the natives thinking the problem would go away but as predicted it did not. All I can think of is better social programs (internally) and let them be. A lot of them have lost their traditional way of life because of the Europeans and now they act like savages with the help of drugs and booze ( I wonder how that happened).

By leaving them alone and not taking any more land. They are better without us.

Keep it simple, know their history, don't make assumptions, and mutual respect.
