They might be depressed. This happened to me and my mom had no idea what was going on. Finally when I was 18 I went to a doctor that cared and they told me that it was depression and once I found the right medication I began to feel like the person taht I knew that I was suppose to be. Maybe they are just shy. That hurts so bad and it will keep you held back from so many things. I would say to find something that they are really interested in and support them. Help them to get to a level in that where they are so confident that they could do it in front of people. Do they feel bad about the way that they look? Help out by suggesting a fun day out with shopping for some new things or getting a new har style. Is weight the problem? That one is hard to fix right away because there are so many factors causing it. The weight could be from depression the depression from the weight. Its a viciouse cycle. Maybe if someone dieted with them and helped them realize that its just as easy as eating the right food and the right portion. Go for a walk with them or become a gym buddy. It is absolutely the worst time in life going through all those bodily changes and having to fit in with peers at the same time. Having someone that is a constant and that they can trust and feel comfortable with makes a big diference too.

Get them involved in activities that will build their self-esteem. If they don't like sports, see what else is out there, like charity work or some new hobby that lets them create something themselves. When I finish a project and I see the outcome, it always helps that I can say, "Gee, I did this!" Another thing that might help is getting them involved with young children, like reading to them at the library. It doesn't take too many little kids thinking you're "cool" to boost your ego.

by talking 2 them,
praising them often & keep the lines of communitcation open.

just by telling them they're
doing well.
they're growing in2 a fine adult.
refer 2 a situation that they handled well & how proud we are of them.
i find by allowing them 2 decide both their punishments & rewards makes them more confident.
always listen 2 them
parents, adults & teachers, MUST learn 2 listen.
a teenager can teach us as much as we can teach them.
:)
