I did for many years. Of course, I was single with no kids and only pets to pay for. I had a nice house and yard, a free-and-clear car and a foreign vacation every year as well as splurging on cable tv.
I felt I was quite comfortable.

You can easily live comfortably in my part of the country on $30,000 a year. However, as you say, it depends on the cost of living for the area you choose.

It would also depend on a lot of other factors--do you rent or own your home? Do you have any long-term obligations, like car payments or child support? We have a mortgage of only about $900.00 a month, and we make more than $30,000 combined, but even then it's a stretch, with a small car payment, student loans, medicines, utilities, etc.

Are you kidding me? We are married, with a 2 year old and one more on the way, and we thrive on that $30,000 a year hubby makes. We don't suffer for anything. We have two laptops, a brand new top of the line PC, our son has awesome toys, and all the necessities we need. We pay all our bills on time, own our car, and are about to buy a new home. So if you are single and make that much, you should be able to live extremely well. Its all about planning!

In San Francisco or New York City...NO. In Idaho...Yes.
It just depends on where in the U.S., and how materialistic you are. Good luck.

I suppose it depends on one's definition of 'comfortable'...I make more than that and I've found myself struggling. Of course, I've lacked discipline as well.
