I know it depends on where in the U.S. since the cost of living can vary so much but if you're single, can you live comfortably on $30,000 a year ?

I did for many years. Of course, I was single with no kids and only pets to pay for. I had a nice house and yard, a free-and-clear car and a foreign vacation every year as well as splurging on cable tv.

I felt I was quite comfortable.

Are you kidding me? We are married, with a 2 year old and one more on the way, and we thrive on that $30,000 a year hubby makes. We don't suffer for anything. We have two laptops, a brand new top of the line PC, our son has awesome toys, and all the necessities we need. We pay all our bills on time, own our car, and are about to buy a new home. So if you are single and make that much, you should be able to live extremely well. Its all about planning!

I suppose it depends on one's definition of 'comfortable'...I make more than that and I've found myself struggling. Of course, I've lacked discipline as well.
